By Karl Rofkar Travaris Cadet is a freshman currently redshirting at the University of Toledo. For a couple weeks, however, he was #2 on the depth chart as injuries had claimed both Clint Cochran and Aaron Opelt. With Opelt back, it appears that Cadet’s redshirt is safe. ToledoRockets.Net had a chance to talk with Travaris on the Monday following the injuries to Clint Cochran and Aaron Opelt. He had just been named the #2 quarterback, backing up D. J. Lenehan. Karl: Where are you from in Florida? Cadet: Miami Karl: What brought you to Toledo Cadet: Basically, it was a recruiting season that was kind of odd. But I felt that I was going to be comfortable, so I came to Toledo. I committed to Minnesota, and I also had an offer from Tennessee, but Tennessee wanted me to grey shirt. I didn’t feel like I wanted to wait til January. So I committed to Minnesota, but it was a head coach/son issue. I felt like if I went to Minnesota I might be cheated, because blood is thicker than water. Plus, my OC in high school he was under Coach Shannon when he was in college. I remember seeing Coach Shannon and I saw the offense, and I thought I’d be comfortable with it, so I was a perfect fit. Karl: So you were comfortable with Coach Shannon right from the get-go? Cadet: Yes sir. (Okay, so the reporter is old!) Karl: I understand you have a pretty good throwing arm, but your real weapon is your feet. Is that right? Cadet: Heh heh…yes it is. Karl: Is the speed in college as different as we’ve always heard (compared to high school)? Cadet: Well, I would say so, but in Florida in terms of speed… Now the tempo and the speed do change, I mean now you’ve got grown men out here with beards! And they work hard. The tempo does change…you ain’t playing with little boys no more! Karl: Tell me about the workouts during the season. Cadet: Basically, I probably lift about 3 times a week. I get on the bike; I’ve gotta be in shape to play my game. With my redshirt, I was working hard, because I wasn’t going to be playing. Sometimes I go running on my own. Karl: So you used a lot of this redshirt year as kind of another off-season? Cadet: Yes. Karl: What brings a guy out of Florida up to a place like Toledo, or Minnesota? It’s going to be cold. Cadet: I always said I wanted to see snow. But since I’m up here now, I’m wishing now! It’s kinda cold NOW, I’m not used to this. Right now it’s cool to me (late September)! Down there, the coldest it gets is about 55. Now I complain and guys look at me like “man, it ain’t cold! Wait til it gets down below zero!” Karl: There was a lot of talk in the off-season about all the quarterbacks here in Toledo. Did that maybe put a little negative in it for you, all that competition? Cadet: No, not really. Where I come from, to be the best, you’ve got to compete. If you run away from competition, you aren’t going to make it to the next level. That’s how I see it. So competition should only make me better. If I’m running away from it, I’m not getting any better, really. Have a question or comment for Karl? Email |
