Q&A with Running Back Jalen Parmele
August 12, 2006
By Brian Nowicki

Our preseason blitz continues with a look at junior running back Jalen Parmele. Parmele, 6-0 and 222 pounds, is from Dow High School in Midland, MI. Rivals.com listed Jalen Parmele with scholarship offers from Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan. After visiting Toledo for an official visit in December of 2003, Jalen cancelled visits to Central Michigan and Western Michigan and publicly committed to Toledo.

As a true freshman in 2004, Jalen played in 9 games, averaging 4.4 yards per rush with 3 touchdowns. Last season Jalen fought through some injuries, playing in 11 games and averaging 4.6 yards per rush with 3 touchdowns. This fall Jalen is in a battle with DaJuane Collins and Richard Davis for the starting running back position, and he looks ready to explode on the scene. Jalen looks bigger, faster, and stronger this year and he is running very good in practices. I recently talked to Jalen about the summer and upcoming season, resulting in the below Q & A.

Jalen Parmele Q & A

When you were in high school, what attracted you to the University of Toledo?
Jalen - The winning tradition, and the coaching staff was easy to get along with.

How did summer workouts go?
Jalen - The summer went pretty well. Almost everybody showed up for the workouts and worked hard. We're ready to have a good season.

What are your impressions of Coach Downing (Jalen's position coach)?
Jalen - He's a very good coach, very smart.

You're just a junior, but you have the most experience of all the running backs. Do you feel a responsibility to be a leader for the rest of the backs?
Jalen - I feel like a leader. I try to help out the rest of the backs as best as I can, just like I was helped out by Trinity and Quinton.

How have DaJuane Collins and Richard Davis been looking so far this year?
Jalen - Each day they're getting better and better.

How are Dontae Jones and Bruce Frieson coming along?
Jalen - They're getting the offense down. It's takes some time, but they are learning the plays as best as they can. They're doing good.

Have you noticed a difference on campus since the merger on July 1st?
Jalen - No, I really haven't noticed a difference.

What do you like to do when you are not on the football field?
Jalen - Study and work out. And also play the NCAA video game.

Have you played as yourself in the game?
Jalen - Yes. I am a better running back in real life though.
