Q&A with Offensive Tackle John Greco
August 29, 2006
By Brian Nowicki

Junior left tackle John Greco is one of the top players on the 2006 University of Toledo football team. The 6-5 and 318 pounder is from Youngstown, OH where he played his high school ball at Boardman High School.

After redshirting in 2003, Greco became a start at right tackle as a redshirt freshman in 2004. He was the recipient of the Norman Cohen Award as the top freshman on the team. In 2005 he moved over to left tackle to replace All-MAC performer Nick Kaczur who is now playing for the New England Patriots in the NFL. John made the transition to left tackle without a problem, earning 1st Team All-MAC honors.

This season John Greco has been named 3rd Team Preseason All-America by Athlon Sports in their preseason preview. He was also named to the Lombardi Award watch list for the nation's best down lineman/linebacker. His teammates voted him as one of two offensive captains, despite the fact that he is only a junior.

John Greco Q & A

What attracted you to the University of Toledo?
John - Not only Coach Amstutz, but the other coaches were so personable and friendly during the recruiting process. They wanted to get to know me and my family and I didn't really get that from any other school. Toledo's got a winning tradition. Playing at the Glass Bowl in front of the fans. They have always had a lot of fans. That's really what swayed me.

What were your first impressions of Coach Amstutz
John - I used to watch games on TV and I would see him and his style of going for it on 4th down and taking chances. I heard positive stories and when I got here I found they were all true. He's a great coach to play for. He really cares about us and looks out for us. He's really personable.

What are your impressions of Coach Clayton(John's position coach)?
John - Coach Clayton is a very intense person and a great coach to play for because his demand upon us is so high. His expectations of everyone are so high that it makes everyone want to work that much harder for him. He puts so much pressure on us to play at a high level. It's awesome to play for a guy like that. He's so devoted to his job and to making us better.

You took over for Nick Kaczur at left tackle after he graduated. What did you learn from him when he was here?
John - When I first started out I roomed with him on the road. It was different for him because he was 25 years old and I was just 18 and I was asking him a lot of questions. He helped me by just saying to play your game, do everything you know you can, and everything will fall into place for you. And he was right. If I were to give advice to a young guy, that is the same thing I would tell them.

Did you stay on campus this summer or go back home?
John - I was here every day. We had workouts this summer and had a great turnout. I would say over 95% of the players were here at all times, and I think that is gonna make us better.

What things do you like to do when you are not on the football field?
John - I like to play golf when I get some free time and the weather is right. I love to cook and just hang out with my friends. I like to Joke around at all times.

Are your friends mostly other football players?
John - I hang out with a lot of guys from the team and a couple of my buddies from back home that go to school here.
