I recently had the pleasure of conducting Barry Church's first interview at the University of Toledo. Church is a 6-3, 215 pound true freshman from Pittsburgh, PA. He played his high school football at Penn Hills SHS, the same school that junior free safety Tyrrell Herbert and true freshman inside linebacker Archie Donald attended.Church was highly recruited out of high school. He ran a 4.47 forty at the Metro Index camp and schools started to notice him. Rivals.com rated him the #42 safety prospect in the nation and gave him 3 stars. As a senior at Penn Hills last fall, Church had 80 tackles and 8 sacks to go along with 6 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries. He played in the Big 33 All-Star game, which pits top recruits from the state of Pennsylvania against top recruits from the state of Ohio. Rivals.com listed him with offers from such schools as Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina State, and West Virginia. In the end though, Barry Church knew that the University of Toledo was where he wanted to go. |

Barry Church Q & A What attracted you to the University of Toledo? Barry - The family atmosphere. When I first came for my official visit they should me a lot of love and they really impressed me. What are your first impressions of Coach Amstutz Barry - He's a great coach. He's an intelligent coach and I really look forward to playing for him. What are your impressions of Coach Walkowsky (Barry's position coach)? Barry - He's a real good coach and a really good teacher of the game. He's helped me to learn all the defenses really quick. You've been on campus all summer and started taking classes over the summer. How hard has it been to adjust to college life? Barry - It's a hard adjustment. We had to wake up extra early everyday to workout and I'm not really used to waking up early like that. Waking up and staying focus was the biggest adjustment for me, because I am usually just running around and having fun in the summer. What things do you like to do when you are not on the football field? Barry - I like to play video games. Especially the NCAA one because I am in the game. You're rated pretty high in that game. Barry - I am! I'm rated an 80 overall and I don't know how I got that. I'm pretty good in that game, so I like playing as myself on it. We don't have a lot of time to ourselves, so that is what I mainly do when I have some free time. Do you have any friends on campus yet? Barry - Just the other football players. Most freshman won't be on campus until the 21st. You went to the same high school as free safety Tyrrell Herbert. Did you get to play football with him back then? Barry - My sophomore year of high school he was the free safety and I got some playing time as the strong safety. He was a great player, and obviously he is a great player now. Since we went to the same high school, we know how each other play. I think that will help us both a lot during the season. Have a question or comment for Brian? Email |
